AOC Meursault is a village appellation of the Côte de Beaune, in the department of Côte d’Or. The appellation is strictly limited to the village of Meursault. The appellation has 21 “Climats” (smaller areas) classified as Premier Cru. In Burgundy, the appellation name may be followed by the name of the “Climat”. Meursault is probably the most famous village for the white wines. The numerous white marns among limestone explains the white wine production as they are more favorable to the culture of the chardonnay grape. But a small production of red wines also exists. It stands for 8% of the Meursault full production. The red wines are light, but still with some structure. Their style is more fine than powerful. Located south of the Côte de Beaune, the vineyards are on gentle hillsides, covering 400 hectares, between 230 and 360 m of altitude. These outstanding soils for the vine culture have been cultivated since 1098 by the Cîteaux monastery. The Appellation d’Origne Controlée was declared in 1937
