Costières de Nimes appellation area lies at the southern end of the Gard district, on a plateau, boarded at the south by The Camargues. Geographically the appellation belongs to the Languedoc Roussillon region, but is included to the Rhône Valley region because of the similarity of the wines characteristics and style. The vineyards of Nimes lie from the city and its famous roman monuments (Pont du Gard, La maison Carrée, the Arena) to the banks of the Rhône River. Planted during the roman period, this vineyard is one of the oldest in Europe, halfway between Occitan and Provence. The wines were appreciated by the Greeks and then by the Romans, then served to the Popes in Avignon and exported from the Century XVI°. At the end of the 19th century, the vineyard is destroyed by the Phylloxera vine disease. Re planted on richer soils in the plain, the vines produce always more, losing their typicity until 1950 when Philippe LAMOUR starts a quality process which includes the use of new varietals, the soils study, oenologist research and modernisation. From a VDQS classification in 1950, Costières du Gard is declared an AOC in 1986 and re named Costières de Nimes in 1989.
