The vineyards of Bergerac spread over the slopes of the two banks of the Dordogne and have more than 12,000 hectares over 93 communes. Planted during the Roman occupation, the vines are cultivated in the Middle Ages by the monks of the abbeys and by local lords. By this time, only wines produced in seven parishes located on the north bank of the Dordogne can be sold in Bergerac. Until the end of the Hundred Years’ War, Bergerac enjoyed a flourishing trade with England and the northern markets of Europe. It's one of the rare wine regions of France producing as much white wine as red wines. It is composed of 13 AOC to vary the pleasure.
