Neighbouring Saint Emilion and Pomerol, a few kilometres from Libourne, the appellation Canon-Fronsac covers 250 hectares, and is one of the smallest of the Bordeaux region. The average size of the chateaux is of 5.96 hectares. The appellation covers the villages of Fronsac and Saint Michel de Fronsac. Two peaks dominate the landscape: Le Tertre du Canon (60m) and le Tertre de Fronsac (76m). The Canon-Fronsac appellation covers the steepest part of the Fronsac area, close to the Dordogne River. It was a fortress at the Napoleon period and a Duke’s estate at the time of the king Henry the 4th. It was moved into an Italian “folie” under the duke of Richelieu, where elegant balls were given contributing to the fame of the local wine.
